A Basic Study on the Measured Data Analysis of Berthing Velocity of Ships

"External forces acting on the mooring facilities include wave, wind, current, and ship’s kinetic energy. In particular, the ship’s kinetic energy is changing as the ship become larger, and larger carrying capacity. In the “Harbour and Fishery Design Criteria, 2014 in Korea”, the designed berthing velocity is introduced by referring to actual measurements or historical literature. However, there are some data that do not correspond to the reality since the data described do not provide sufficient data about large vessel and the data is not updated for a long time. Accordingly, “PIANC Working Group 145(Draft version)” recognizes the importance of berthing velocity for a fender design standard, it is established that the confidence level is set to the degree of confidence based on the measurement results of the berthing velocity. Currently, the berthing velocity is given as the average value, but it is necessary to arrange clearly for the safety of ships. In this study, berthing velocity and angle were collected and analyzed for each vessel size and each jetty on tanker terminals equipped with a DAS (Docking Aid System), which is a vessel speed measuring device. The design berthing angles usually range 5~7 degrees as specified in most fender system design specifications. However, few studies have been done on the these berthing angles. The purpose of this study is to utilize it as basic data for safer and efficient harbour and fender system design. As a result, the average value of the data was 7.1cm/s, standard deviation 4.47 and maximum measured value was 24.6cm/s based on the analysis of the actual measurement data on 133 tanker installed with DAS. The peak values at berthing velocity were found to be in relation to the log-normal distribution, but the distribution geometry was generally found to be in accordance with the normal distribution. And in case of berthing angle, the mean values of the data was 7.25, standard deviation 3.57, and the maximum measured value was 18.45, and the berthing angle were found to be in relation to the normal distribution."
